Career Awareness Lessons Plans K-6

 

 

Welcome to The Storybook Station=s Career Awareness Program.  This program is designed to raise a child=s interest in numerous careers that exist in the world around us.  The literature-based curriculum focuses on careers selected from a six-career pathway design:

$ Fine Arts & Communication

 

In each packet you will find the literature** and a guide to enable you to integrate career awareness into your daily lesson plans.  It is designed in a manner that easily adapts to different styles of teaching.  You can introduce careers, while providing simple art, math, science, music, social studies, or language arts activities.  Each teacher=s guide contains career background information, book summary, lesson plans for simple activities, list of related literature, and community resources when available.

Each unit applies the National Career Development Guidelines to the literature selections and/or the carefully developed activities.  These activities also support grade level appropriate emphasis on the components required by School-To-Work legislation.  Those components are: School-based learning, Work-based learning, and Connecting activities.  This curriculum provides career awareness opportunities for all students.

The Storybook Station, Inc. has previewed all web sites listed in our Resource section of these materials for appropriateness for children in K-6th grades.  We have not, however, viewed any of the links within these sites.  It is our belief that children should be observed by adults whenever they are using the Internet.

CAREER FOCUS – PEDIATRICIAN

TITLE: Froggy Goes to the Doctor*

AUTHOR: Jonathan London

SUMMARY: Hurry up!@ says Froggy=s mother. AIt=s time to go to the doctor for your check-up.@  Froggy doesn=t want to go.  What if the doctor gives him a shot?  Froggy is nervous.  Everyone needs to go to the doctor for check-ups, but for a child, or a AFroggy@, a visit to the doctor can be a bewildering experience.

 

TITLE:  What to Expect When You Go to the Doctor

AUTHOR:  Heidi Murkoff

SUMMARY: Everyone needs to go to the doctor for checkups.  But for a child who doesn=t yet understand what staying healthy means and why it=s important, a visit to the doctor can be a bewildering experience.  With the help of Angus, the lovable Answer Dog, this experience is easily explained.

 

CAREER FOCUS - DIETITIAN

TITLE: Edible Pyramid

AUTHOR: Loreen Leedy

SUMMARY: Let=s eat!  Come into The Edible Pyramid, a restaurant that serves all kinds of delicious and nutritious meals.  The pyramid was adopted from The Food Guide Pyramid: A Guide to Daily Food Choices, which was introduced by the  U. S. Department of Agriculture in1992. Nutrition has never been this much fun!

TITLE: Old MacDonald Had a Woodshop

AUTHOR: Lisa Shulman

SUMMARY: Old MacDonald is busy building something.  One by one, all the animals on the farm come to help, except for the babies.  They hover at the door, trying to see what the project is going to be.  With a rurr rurr, tap tap, chip chip, scritch scritch, squeak squeak, and swish swash, sounds here and there, sounds are everywhere.  This is a big hit for tool lovers and children who love to sing.

 

CAREER FOCUS – CARPENTER

TITLE:  Bling Blang*

AUTHOR:  Woody Guthrie

SUMMARY: Run bring rocks and I=ll bring bricks.  A nice pretty house we=ll build and fix.  What fun building and fixing a house, with this song by Wood Guthrie.  Bright, bold, colorful illustrations are very inviting for this story.  Children can come along and build, fix, and sing.

 

CAREER FOCUS – CUSTODIAN

TITLE: Albert’s Alphabet

AUTHOR: Leslie Tryon

SUMMARY:  Albert is the custodian/school carpenter at Pleasant Valley School. Having been asked to build an alphabet, Albert uses all the supplies in his workshop and then uses everything around him to complete the job on time.

CAREER FOCUS - FOOD PRODUCTION WORKER

TITLE: Tortilla Factory*

AUTHOR: Gary Paulsen

SUMMARY: In the spring the black earth is worked by brown hands.  The brown hands plant the yellow seeds.  From the yellow seeds, grow the green plants.  The corn comes from the green plants.  The corn is ground into flour.  This is a story of tortillas from the planting of the corn to the consumption of the product.  It is a simple and lovely story

TITLE: Lettuce: The Dancing Rabbit*

AUTHOR: Mandy Stanley

SUMMARY:  Lettuce Rabbit wants to be a ballerina more than anything else in the world.  But is being the star of the show really better than being a rabbit?

TITLE: Apple Farmer Annie*

AUTHOR: Monica Wellington

SUMMARY: Annie has an apple farm.  At harvest-time, she picks plenty of sweet crunchy apples and uses them to make many tasty treats. 

 

CAREER FOCUS – METEOROLOGIST

TITLE: Geoffrey Groundhog Predicts the Weather

AUTHOR: Bruce Kosceklniak

SUMMARY: A humorous story about Geoffrey Groundhog, who is well known for predicting how long winter will last, and on each February 2nd, everyone waits to hear what  he has to say when he sees his shadow.

TITLE: Moses Goes to School*

AUTHOR: Isaac Millman

SUMMARY: Moses goes to a special school, a public school for the deaf.  All his classmates are deaf or hard of hearing; but that doesn=t mean they don=t have a lot to say to each other!  They communicate in American Sign Language. 

 

CAREER FOCUS – ELEMENTARY TEACHER

TITLE: Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!

AUTHOR: Nancy Carlson

SUMMARY:   It’s the first day of kindergarten and Henry is very excited and ready to go. First he eats a good breakfast and packs his backpack.   Filled with humor and encouragement, this is a good book to help children feel good about themselves and kindergarten. 

 

CAREER FOCUS - ELEMENTARY TEACHER

TITLE: Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten    

AUTHOR: Joseph Slate

SUMMARY:   Miss Bindergarten=s soon-to-be students are excitedly, anxiously getting ready at home. Meanwhile, Miss Bindergarten is getting ready, too, gathering her gear and preparing her classroom.  This story contains rhyming text, which also incorporates the alphabet for added interest.

TITLE: Pigs Rock!*

AUTHOR: Melanie Davis Jones

SUMMARY: Pigs Rock and Roll!  Pigs sing with heart and soul!  Hop on the bus and join the fun as the pig rock band takes off on tour.  Young fans will squeal with delight as they get to experience everything from jamming on stage to signing autographs to driving off to the next gig.  

           

            CAREER FOCUS – DANCER

TITLE:  Ten Go Tango

AUTHOR:  Arthur Dorros

  SUMMARY:  In this counting book, ten groups of animals participate in ten different dances.  Read along from 1 osprey dancing ballet to 10 flamingos dancing the tango.  The dance floor expands to a special fold out with 55 animals rocking away.

 

CAREER FOCUS – ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR

TITLE: The Maestro Plays

AUTHOR: Bill Martin, Jr.

SUMMARY: The Maestro plays. He plays proudly. He plays loudly. He plays slowly. He plays oh-ly. The lively and spirited Maestro plays an assortment of instruments in a variety of ways.

CAREER FOCUS –DIETITIAN

TITLE: Good Enough To Eat*

AUTHOR: Lizzy Rockwell

SUMMARY: Eating is the most important thing you do each day, and this book explains why.  The book is filled with many eating and nutrition facts.  This book includes the food pyramid, a calorie section, and recipes for kids and adults to cook together.

 

CAREER FOCUS - VETERINARIAN

TITLE: Gumbrella*

AUTHOR: Barry Root

SUMMARY:   Gumbrella loves cute little animals.  She=s also a take-charge kind of girl.  So when her brother, Trumbull, comes home with a hurt mouse, naturally she starts an animal hospital.  Gumbrella announces that she will be both the doctor and the nurse and that Trumbull will serve as the ambulance to transport the patients.  Gumbrella takes excellent care of the patients.  There is only one problem.  Once they are all feeling better, Gumbrella won=t let them leave. 

 

            CAREER FOCUS – SURGEON

TITLE:  Paddington Bear Goes to the Hospital*

AUTHOR:  Michael Bond and Karen Jankel

SUMMARY:  Oh No!  Paddington Bear has hurt his arm, and he=s having trouble remembering just how it happened.  When Paddington has to go to the hospital the kind nurses and doctors and even the patients themselves help Paddington see that the hospital isn=t as scary as it first seems. 

 

CAREER FOCUS – OPTOMETRIST

TITLE: All the Better to See You With

AUTHOR: Margaret Wild

SUMMARY:   Kate is a quiet child in a busy family with four noisy brothers and sisters, and her parents are slow to notice that she is experiencing some difficulty with her vision, until Kate has a problem seeing and finding her parents on the beach. Kate is nearsighted and needs glasses.

 

CAREER FOCUS – PEDIATRICIAN

TITLE: Arthur’s Chicken Pox

AUTHOR: Marc Brown

SUMMARY:  Arthur is in school and he is feeling sick. First, he has a temperature and then red spots that itch like crazy. He has the chicken pox, a typical childhood disease. Only special cherry cough drops, and Grandma Thora’s soothing baths manage to make the days stuck at home more bearable. To top it all, the circus is coming to town, and Arthur may not be well in time to see the circus.

TITLE: The Night Worker

AUTHOR: Kate Banks

SUMMARY:   Night falls. Bedtime comes. Papa kisses Alex good night. Then he puts on his hard hat. He is an engineer. And he is a night worker. One night Papa has a hard hat for Alex. They go out together to be night workers. Alex sees all the workers that work together as a team to complete the building.

SUMMARY:  Dan's got more than 30 pairs of funny pants in his closet.  Every day is dress-up day for Dan!  Dan's a tall guy and he covers those mile-high legs of his with the wildest pants you've ever seen.  Every week he sells bolts of fabric to fabric stores, dragging suitcases full of samples from one buyer to the next.  Every season, Dan's wife makes him a pair of pants from his favorite fabric.  Fun, imaginative, and colorfully visual.

TITLE: Hamburger Heaven*

AUTHOR: Wong Herbert Lee

SUMMARY: Pinky Pig's clarinet has met with an unfortunate accident.  Lucky for Pinky, she works at Hamburger Heaven and she can save her money for a new one.  Pinky overhears that she might be losing her job!  It seems that the customers have grown tired of a menu that serves the same cheeseburgers day after day prepared by Chef Rhino.  Maybe Pinky's new menu can save the restaurant and her job. 

 

CAREER FOCUS - TRUCK DRIVER

TITLE: Peter’s Trucks

AUTHOR: Sallie Wolf

SUMMARY:  Peter sees many different types of trucks and learns what each one carries. There are trucks carrying milk, gasoline, pianos, garbage, ice cream, money, concrete, and cows. Peter sees all the people who work with the trucks and what is inside the trucks! The story is told in wonderful rhyme.

TITLE: Two for Stew*

SUMMARY:  Because the restaurant is out of stew, and the grandmother who makes it is out for the evening, two friends find a different way to enjoy themselves.

TITLE:   The Beeman*

AUTHOR: Laurie Krebs

SUMMARY:  With rhyming text and warm, expressive paintings, this picture book takes the reader through a year of beekeeping from the point of view of a little girl helping her beloved grandpa, known as the Beeman. The book touches on all aspects of beekeeping, from how the keeper dresses, to how to care for the hive and harvest the honey.  There is a lot of information in this fun story. 

 

CAREER FOCUS - SEISMOLOGIST

TITLE: Earthquakes*

AUTHOR: Ellen J. Prager

SUMMARY: Earthquakes happen all the time all over the world, but they are usually too small for us the feel.  This book answers many questions about earthquakes and provides some information on the people who research them. 

 

            CAREER FOCUS – ZOOKEEPER

TITLE:  If Anything Ever Goes Wrong at the Zoo*

AUTHOR:  Mary Jane Hendricks

SUMMARY:  After a young girl tells the zoo keepers to send the animals to her house should anything go wrong at the zoo, a series of zoo emergencies result in some unusual house-guests for the girl and her family.

TITLE:  Sugarbush Springs*

AUTHOR:  Marsha Wilson Chall

SUMMARY: In the month of the Maple Sugar Moon, the snow=s too wet for angel making.  Icicles are raining from Grandpa=s roof, and something special is stirring in the woods. It=s sugarbush spring; time to tap the trees, collect the sap, and gather round the cook fire awaiting the arrival of syrup.  The beautiful paintings that illustrate the story are an invitation to join in the making of maple syrup.  The process is the same today as it was two hundred years ago.

SUMMARY:  Nora wants to find a way to give the horses a special treat for helping her grandfather gather sap to make maple syrup.

CAREER FOCUS - PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPERATOR

TITLE: Axle Annie*

AUTHOR: Robin Pulver

SUMMARY:   Axle Annie is the best school bus driver in Burskyville - especially when it comes to driving her bus on snow-covered Tiger Hill, the toughest slope in town.  Because of Annie, the superintendent never has to declare a snow day.  And that’s just why grouchy bus driver Shifty Rhodes hatches a plot to stop Axle Annie in her tracks.

TITLE: Firefighters A to Z*

SUMMARY: This book is a presentation of a day in the life of firefighters whose job it is to put out fires, save property and lives.  The book=s alphabetical format is grade level appropriate for the young reader. 

 

CAREER FOCUS - ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER

TITLE: My Teacher’s Secret Life

AUTHOR: Stephen Krensky

SUMMARY:   Where do teachers go when the school day ends?  After observing his teacher at the supermarket, at the mall, and even in a park, a young child begins to think that the teacher has a secret life.  Story includes school personnel, custodian, kitchen staff, librarian, principal, and special subjects teachers.

        

CAREER FOCUS - FIREFIGHTING

TITLE:  Fire Fighters

AUTHOR:  Norma Simon

SUMMARY: What are these busy and daring Dalmatians doing?  They are diligent fire fighters.  This story describes the vehicles, the care and use of equipment, and emergency procedures used by fire fighters.  This information is used in fighting fires, but also in investigating the causes of fires.

TITLE: A Bird or Two*

AUTHOR: Bijou Le Tord

SUMMARY: In the brilliant sun of Nice, France, Henri Matisse painted the boldest, brightest colors he could imagine.  Joyfully, he painted everywhere and everyone.  Enchanted with a light heart, he painted all the time.  The illustrations capture the spirit and style of Matisse=s work, and the text sings the music of his art.

TITLE: A Blue Butterfly: A Story About Claude Monet

AUTHOR: Bijou Le Tord

SUMMARY:   In a garden of spectacular beauty in Giverny, France, Claude Monet painted flowers. Dazzled by the light, he painted with rich colors of vermilion, emerald and violet. TITLE: Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin

AUTHOR: Lloyd Moss

SUMMARY:   When this book begins, the trombone is playing all by itself. But soon a trumpet makes it a duet, a French horn makes it a trio, and so on until 10 instruments have assembled on stage to make an orchestra. This story is written in elegant and rhythmic verse.

TITLE: Bravo, Livingstone Mouse*

AUTHOR: Pamela Duncan Edwards

SUMMARY: Livingstone Mouse puts on his explorer hat and takes off to explore the world.  He comes to the Wild Wood and all its creatures preparing for a musical performance to showcase their talents.

CAREER FOCUS - PHYSICAL THERAPIST

TITLE: Rolling Along*

AUTHOR: Jamie Riggio Heelan

SUMMARY:   Taylor and Tyler are twin brothers and best friends.  But the twins are different in one significant way: Taylor has cerebral palsy, while Tyler does not.  Taylor works hard to strengthen his legs with physical therapy, but when he gets a wheel chair he is able to go more places.  Wheelchairs allow many people independence. 

 

CAREER FOCUS - SURGEON

TITLE: Good-Bye Tonsils

AUTHOR: Juliana Lee Hatkoff

SUMMARY:  Juliana=s sick of nonstop sore throats.  So when Dr. Ward tells her that the only way to make her throat better is to take out her tonsils, Juliana is ready to say AGood-bye tonsils!@  Dr. Ward, her parents, and her friends tell Juliana all about what to expect at the hospital.  

 

            CAREER FOCUS – DENTIST

TITLE:  Open Wide – Tooth School Inside

AUTHOR:  Laurie Keller

SUMMARY: It=s time for tooth school, and Dr. Flossman is excited to meet the incoming class of 32 teeth.  There are 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars, and 12 molars, including 4 wisdom teeth.  There=s just so much to learn, from brushing and flossing to dentin and pulp to every student=s nightmare - tooth decay!  This is a funny book full of interesting facts, with a special guest appearance from the Tooth Fairy.

 

CAREER FOCUS - ASSISTANT DOG TRAINER

TITLE: My Buddy

AUTHOR: Audrey Osofsky

SUMMARY:   Buddy is the best dog a boy could have. He and his master are always together. They play ball, and go for walks, and take good care of each other.  Nothing can separate them. They are a team. My Buddy is an easy-to-read, first person, narrative of an unusual friendship between a handicapped child and a working dog.

 

CAREER FOCUS - X-RAY TECHNOLOGIST

TITLE: Dem Bones

AUTHOR: Bob Barner

SUMMARY:   Sing along with a colorful skeleton band in this exuberant rendition of a traditional African American Spiritual. Children will enjoy connecting the bones, as they learn interesting bone facts. The text combines with vibrant paper collage illustrations to create a perfect introduction to the human anatomy that is a rollicking read-a-loud text.

TITLE: One Giant Leap: The Story of Neil Armstrong*

AUTHOR:   Don Brown

SUMMARY: This is an inspiring story of Neil Armstrong, who as a young boy, had a recurring dream in which he held  his breath and floated high above the people, houses, and cars.  He spent his free time reading stacks of flying magazines, building model airplanes, and staring through the home-made telescope mounted on the roof of his neighbor=s garage.  On July 20, 1969, he became the first man to set foot on the moon.  This story of Neil Armstrong reminds the reader that all heroes were once small children.

 

CAREER FOCUS – ARCHITECT

TITLE: Roberto the Insect Architect

AUTHOR: Nina Laden

SUMMARY:   Roberto has always wanted to be an architect.  He follows his dream to the big, buzzing city, where he meets some not-so-creepy crawlers that lend Roberto encouragement to build a community for them all.  The story is very cleverly illustrated with detailed collages and humorously written to inspire readers of any age to build their dreams.

 

CAREER FOCUS - PILOT

TITLE: Flight

AUTHOR: Robert Burleigh

SUMMARY:  Charles Lindbergh didn=t know if he would ever see Paris  when he left Long Island early that morning in May 1927.  He achieved two great feats; the first non-stop, and the  first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.  This book is an  intimate telling of Lindbergh=s experience on the 33 2  hour flight that puts the reader in the cockpit to share this story of courage and endurance.

 

CAREER FOCUS - MECHANICAL ENGINEER

TITLE: Next Stop Grand Central

AUTHOR: Maira Kalman

SUMMARY:   It’s just another day at Grand Central, the busiest train station on earth. While there is a lost dog, a giant chicken blocking the tracks,  there are twelve lost children on a trip to the Empire State Building, and Mary Donch is busy driving the train. Everyone is running and rushing to work and travel, passing through this very busy and grand place.

 

         CAREER FOCUS – TOY INDUSTRY WORKER

TITLE: Leo Cockroach...Toy Tester

AUTHOR: Kevin O=Malley

SUMMARY:  Leo Cockroach secretly tests toys for Mildred Splatt, the bug hating president and CEO of Whaddatoy Toys.  Leo knows how to pick the hottest toys each season. But, Leo=s existence is both unknown and unappreciated by Mildred Splatt.  She hates cockroaches.  What would she do if she knew her top toy tester was a cockroach?  Leo seeks employment and happiness across the street at another toy company.  Leo finds himself worse off than before and Whaddatoy misses their top toy tester.  Leo writes Mrs. Splatt a letter divulging his identity.  Things work out quite well for Leo, once he and Mrs. Splatt understood each other.

TITLE: Meet Me in the Magic Kingdom

AUTHOR: Kathy Jakobsen

SUMMARY:  Kate and her family live in Connecticut.  Kate=s cousin Bonnie and her family live in Minnesota.  Every year the two families travel together for a family reunion.  This year is especially exciting.  The two families are going to meet in The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida.  The story follows the two families en route to Florida, and through the Magic Kingdom.
